Patong has the largest nightlife and entertainment concentration. Kata and Karon balance beach access with restaurants and family facilities. Kamala is calmer, Mai Khao and the northern coast feel more spacious, and Phuket Old Town suits culture, cafés and local food rather than a beachfront stay.

Go beyond the beach
Phuket Old Town reflects the island’s trading and tin-mining history through Sino-European shophouses, shrines, museums and food traditions. The Tourism Authority of Thailand highlights the old quarter’s multicultural heritage and recommends combining it with viewpoints and temples.
Island trips to areas such as Ko Racha or Phi Phi can be memorable, but sea conditions, crowding and operator quality vary. Check boat type, passenger capacity, weather cancellation rules and environmental practices.
Plan around monsoon conditions
The drier period is commonly associated with calmer beach conditions, while the southwest monsoon can bring heavier rain, rough seas and red-flag days. Weather can change quickly and conditions differ by coast.
The Tourism Authority of Thailand specifically advises visitors to observe red beach flags. Do not enter the water when lifeguards or warnings indicate unsafe conditions.
Transport and road safety
Phuket International Airport is in the north, so transfer time to southern beaches can be substantial. Compare official airport transport, pre-booked transfers and app-based services where available.
Motorbike crashes are a serious traveller risk. Use licensed transport, wear a helmet, avoid riding without appropriate experience and insurance, and never assume a rental agreement provides adequate protection.
Food and local culture
Phuket’s cuisine reflects Thai, Chinese, Malay and Peranakan influences. Old Town is a strong place to explore Hokkien noodles, dim sum, local pancakes and market food. Popular restaurants and weekend streets can become busy, so combine planned stops with smaller family-run venues.
