Private-island resorts offer an all-in-one stay with controlled facilities, while inhabited local islands can provide guesthouses, community life and lower accommodation costs. Local customs and dress expectations apply more visibly on inhabited islands, and alcohol is generally limited to licensed resort or liveaboard settings.

Calculate transfers before booking
A low room price can be misleading when mandatory seaplane, speedboat or domestic-flight transfers are added. Confirm the transfer type, operating hours, luggage limits, child pricing and what happens after a late international arrival.
Seaplanes generally operate during daylight. Some distant atolls require a domestic flight followed by a boat. Keep international arrival and departure times compatible with the transfer plan.
Weather, water and marine life
Conditions vary by atoll and season. The drier northeast monsoon period is commonly favoured for sunshine, while the southwest monsoon can bring more cloud, rain and wind. Diving and wildlife conditions do not follow one simple nationwide rule, so ask operators about the specific atoll and month.
Use reef-safe practices, never stand on coral, and choose operators that brief guests on currents, wildlife distance and marine protection.
Understand the complete price
Compare taxes, transfers, meal plans, drinking water, excursions, equipment hire and spa costs. Full-board and all-inclusive packages can simplify spending, but inclusions vary widely. Read beverage, restaurant and activity exclusions before paying.
Entry requirements
Maldives Immigration currently states that tourist visas are granted on arrival without pre-approval, subject to admissibility and entry requirements. These include an MRZ passport with at least one month validity, a confirmed onward journey, prepaid confirmed accommodation at a registered facility or approved sponsorship, sufficient funds, and onward-destination requirements.
Inbound travellers must submit the free Traveller Declaration through the official IMUGA portal within 96 hours before arrival. Requirements can change, so verify directly with Maldives Immigration before departure.
Culture, health and safety
The Maldives is a Muslim country. Respect local dress and behaviour rules on inhabited islands. Bring required medication in original packaging and verify restrictions before travel. Strong sun, dehydration, currents and boat movement are more common practical risks than crime on resort islands.
